Christian Education at West Parish:
Church School

Welcome to the 2005-2006
Sunday School Program
at West Parish!

Church School Director: Carol Boley
Nursery Care Coordinator: Cheryl Quast

We strive to provide a well-rounded Christian Education for children in our community, from nursery through high school. Our volunteer teachers use "Seasons of the Spirit" as a curriculum guide.

Students in third grade and above are equipped with their own Bible (NIV or NSRV); we encourage children to bring their bible to class each week. Visitors are always welcome.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions throughout the year, please feel free to call the church office at 362-4445 or email us at sundayschool@westparish.org.

REGISTRATION

Parents/guardians must complete an enrollment form for each child participating in Sunday School or our Nursery Care program. New families are welcome throughout the program year; please contact the , Church School Director.

Rally Day is the day we traditionally kick off our Sunday School program for the year. Children sign up for class, meet their teachers, sign up for junior choir and junior bells, and have a fun day of celebration. Rally day is scheduled for SEPTEMBER 16th, 2007.

NURSERY CARE

Babies & toddlers (ages 2-3 yrs.) are lovingly cared for in our nursery room. Parents may begin bringing their little ones at 9:45 a.m. Visitors are welcome and will be asked to complete a "Visitor Sign-in" sheet, informing us of allergies or other special needs. Care is provided until the end of worship, approximately 11:15 a.m. The child will only be released to the parent who brought the child. Please do not send siblings to pick up children.

In the event a child is extremely weepy or upset, and attempts to redirect their attention fail, the Nursery Care Director will signal the parent with our wireless "beeper" system. We ask that no children be brought to Nursery Care if they have a fever or have had antibiotics administered to them 24 hours prior to coming.

WORSHIP

All Sunday School age children attend the beginning of worship (until approximately 10:30 a.m.) each Sunday, with the exception of the first Sunday of the month. It is on this day that students gather in Jenkins Hall as a group for a Children’s Worship Service. The Children's Worship is a complete worship that follows the lectionary but is specifically designed for the children in the Church School.

ATTENDANCE

It is our hope that with regular attendance, all children will receive a well-rounded Christian Education.

CONDUCT

As Jesus taught, we strive to treat eachother with respect and love. With this in mind, each class writes their own covenant, the guideline for classroom behavior. If children are disruptive and break the covenant, they will be brought back to their parents.

DISMISSAL

Classes are in session until 11:15 a.m. and should not be disturbed until then. Students in Preschool/Kindergarten through Grade 5 MUST be picked up at their classroom locations. Older students will proceed directly to coffee hour in Jenkins Hall. Please note: For safety reasons, once dismissed, children should remain with you at all times.

SAFETY CONCERNS

All rooms comply with fire laws. For safety reasons, once students have been picked up from their room by a parent/guardian, they must remain with them throughout their stay during coffee hour. Children will be discouraged from wandering the halls without supervision.

The care and protection of all children are of primary concern to us at West Parish. For this reason, each classroom has two adults present: the primary teacher and a volunteer from the Church. If a volunteer is not available, and if it would be inappropriate to combine classes, students in that class will be returned to their parents during worship. All teachers are CORI-checked.

FIRE DRILLS
Two drills per program year will be conducted. One will be a planned drill in October and another "surprise" drill in Spring. Teachers have been instructed to take attendance immediately. The attendance booklet will be brought with them as they lead students safely out of the building.

BIBLES

Gift Bibles will be presented to all third graders. Students are encouraged to bring them to class each week thereafter.

STEWARDSHIP

Throughout the year, children will be involved in various stewardship activities, such as Heifer Project, KidPacks, Food Pantry, and support of a child in Sri Lanka. Typically, offering monies are distributed to these worthwhile causes. The children may be asked for volunteer donations to the Cape Cod Council of Churches (CCCC) Food Pantry or Christmas "wish list" programs.

OFFERING

Envelopes are distributed at the beginning the school year, and to new students upon registration. Offering is collected weekly; offerings of food for the food pantry are also welcome. Please note that the message is more important than the amount.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Special projects or group activities are scheduled whenever there is a school holiday or 3-day weekend. They are usually centered around a holiday and/or a selected topic. Teachers and students meet as a whole group. This allows spiritual growth as a community of individuals, who grow together in God's Love.
